WELCOMEEditor’s NoteLisa Teo2|The topic of safety surrounds the editorial for this issue. The opening article brings an overview on maritime safety accompanied with an article written by an experienced seafarer who brings us his viewpoints on navigating the Malacca and Singapore straits safely. On the international platform, we sought to build balance in the global approach towards sea safety through means of collaboration, standardisation and technology. We also present the new generation of safety benchmarks whilst drawing lessons learnt through analysing data collected from past cases. We switched the backdrop to a buoyant mood with some highlights from the educational and networking sessions organised by SSA and exhilarating news like the introduction of the MPA Maritime Youth Festival and the upcoming Tuas Terminal in 2030 to expand our talent pool and supporting Singapore as a global maritime nation respectively. Finally, let us strive towards safer navigation through constant improvements and simultaneously forge an even more engaging environment for the new talents to come.Upcoming SSA Events and Important Dates (Oct 2016 – Dec 2016)3/OCTInternational Committee Meeting5/OCTYoung Executives Group (YEG) Committee Meeting14/OCTBunkering Sub- Committee Meeting20/OCTOffshore Tax Sub-committee Meeting24/OCTOperations, Training & Manning Sub-Committee Meeting29/OCTPublic Holiday: Deepavali01/NOVOffshore Training Development & Education Sub-Committee Meeting02/NOVCruise Sub-Committee Meeting08/NOVShip Operations and Port Services Sub-Committee Meeting10/NOVMaritime Safety & Security Sub-Committee Meeting17/NOVTechnical Committee Meeting24/NOVSSA Council Meeting25/NOVOffshore Committee Meeting06/DECEvent: SSA Year End Cocktail Reception07/DECServices Committee Meeting14/DECLegal & Insurance Committee Meeting25/DECPublic Holiday: Christmas DayWAVES | ISSUE 51
