NEWS12|the maritime industry came together to share best safety at sea practices with the local and international community.New events planned for Safety@Sea Week 2016 include industry visits to MPA’s Integrated Simulation Centre and Swire Marine Training Centre, networking receptions and exhibition booths at the conference. In addition to the PSA Marine’s Pilot Incentive Awards, MPA will be also be recognising 10 companies for their contribution to maritime safety. MPA and the United States Coast Guard will also be hosting the AMVER (Atlantic Merchant Vessel Emergency Reporting) Awards, of which 92 companies in Singapore will receive awards for their participation in the AMVER scheme.National Maritime Safety at Sea CouncilMPA announced the establishment of a National Maritime Safety at Sea Council (NMSSC) on 17 August 2015. The Council was formed to spearhead the drive for maritime safety on a national level, and to ensure the sustainability of safety efforts. The NMSSC is chaired by Prof. Richard Lim and comprises of 14 other professionalsfrom across the industry with extensive maritime-related experience. (See Annex 1)The logo of the NMSSC was launched by Mr Lucien Wong, Chairman MPA and Prof. Richard Lim, Chairman NMSSC.MPA conducts an annual ferry rescue exercise to test the emergency preparedness of responding agencies and ferry operatorsSafety InitiativesTo enhance safety of navigation in the Port of Singapore, MPA formed working groups with different sectors of the industry, namely the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA), pilotage service provider PSA Marine Pte Ltd (PSAM), operators of regional ferries and pleasure craft communities.The various working groups meet regularly to discuss safety issues and brainstorm new ideas to enhance safety of navigation. These sessions have led to a slew of practical measures implemented by MPA, such as the revision of Pilot Eastern Boarding Ground to enhance the safety of vessel approaches to the Port of Singapore.
