Dining in the gym


The German Gymnasium has sprung up in what was once Britain’s irst 

ever purpose-built gym in King’s Cross, London. 
The three-storey grade II listed building now houses a grand café, 

outdoor terrace, restaurant, bars and private dining spaces. 

The brasserie type menus include sausages sourced from Germany and 
classic Mittel-European dishes such as Tyrolean hey speck with celeriac 

remoulade and pickles and veal schnitzel, while for dessert there is 
sachertorte and Black Forest gateau.

Rarely seen monotypes



The Museum of Modern Art in New York plays host to Edgar Degas: 
A Strange New Beauty, a major exhibition which focuses on Hilaire- 

Germain-Edgar Degas’s extraordinary and rarely seen monotypes 

and their impact on his wide practice.
A huge igure in 19th century art, Degas is best known as a painter 

and chronicler of the ballet, and this is the irst US exhibition in nearly 
50 years to examine these radical and innovative works. It features 

about 130 monotypes along with some 50 related works, including 
paintings, drawings, pastels, sketchbooks and prints, and a range of 

subject matters are explored including scenes of modern life, harshly 
illuminated café singers, ballet dancers onstage and backstage, the 

life of the brothel and landscapes.
