Meeting the offshore challenge
By Sanjay Dasmunshy, Fleet Group Manager
Developing marginal oil fields in an economically attractive manner is often challenging, as
they need the same expensive infrastructure as large fields, while the expected revenue
streams are smaller due to the smaller reserve sizes.
The Balai Cluster Risk Service Contract was
awarded in August 2011 to BC Petroleum Sdn
Bhd.
The EPV Balai Mutiara was converted from a
tanker to an early production vessel which sailed
out from Keppel shipyard in May 2013 and
Thome Oil and Gas took the vessel out to the field
soon after.
Given the weather conditions during this
period of the year, she went for extensive sea
trials to test her station holding capacity in the
field -130 km northeast of Bintulu, Sarawak .
After successfully completing the trials the
EPV Balai Mutiara, with on board storage
capacity of about 50,000 barrels, well testing
facilities and accommodation for 40 persons,
was on site in time.
The first oil commenced on 6th Nov 2013 and involved in this project right from day one and has
the vessel proved its capability braving the heavy been rendering its Operation and Maintenance
weather in the field. Thome Oil and Gas has been
management services with great success.
