COSCO add credence to the belief that Chinese 

cargoes in Chinese ships will become more 

common, and the Chinese desire to build up their 


domestically-controlled VLCC leet is evidenced by 

the number of Chinese-controlled VLCCs on order. 

There will, however, still be plenty of cargo which 

needs to be moved in ships taken from the open 

market, so I do not foresee a scenario where China 

begins to shut out the use of foreign-owned ships.


“For the privately held shipping companies, who 

still represent a signiicant portion of the Asian- 

controlled leet and who still retain considerable 

clout in the region, the next decade will provide 

plenty of challenges, but I believe that they will 


continue to play a pivotal role in the Asian shipping 

landscape. Of course, I am bound to say that as I 

have a vested interest,” she said.
